This charming machiya, once a kimono shophouse, sits just off Omiya-dori in a neighborhood once home to silk thread merchants who supplied the imperial court. During the Edo period, the area was known as Ito-ya-cho, a district full of thread shops and bustling trade. Our house dates back to the late Edo or early Meiji era, with parts of the original structure, such as the storehouse, still preserved. Today, this historic home has been thoughtfully restored to welcome travelers from around the world. well-preserved machiya townhouses in nishijin textile district, kyoto

Learn more about Kamigyo Ward

Enso Machiya - A Luxurious Stay

Enso, a charming Kyoto boutique hotel, is located at the heart of Kamigyo Ward (上京区, かみぎょうく), one of the eleven wards in the city of Kyoto, within Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. This historic ward served as a district for residences of royalty, aristocrats, and the upper classes in the old capital of Japan—Heian-kyō. Nestled in the center of present-day Kyoto, it once occupied the northern region of the ancient capital. The beautiful Kamo River flows on the eastern border of the ward, enhancing its scenic appeal. Kamigyo Ward is also home to the Kyoto Imperial Palace, the Kitano Tenmangu Shinto shrine, the Seimei shrine, Nishijin-ori textiles, and the headquarters of the Omotesenke and Urasenke schools of Japanese tea ceremony. For travelers seeking a unique experience, the area features traditional machiya townhouses that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Kyoto.
