Kyomachiya are traditional townhouses that have been an integral part of Kyoto’s architectural soul for centuries. With their graceful wooden facades and ingenious design, these heritage homes once seamlessly blended home and business. Built using locally sourced materials, they were designed to withstand Kyoto’s climate, with narrow, deep structures that maximized natural ventilation. These homes reflect the harmony between beauty and utility, serving as a testament to the city’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.
This charming machiya, once a kimono shophouse, sits just off Omiya-dori in a neighborhood once home to silk thread merchants who supplied the imperial court. During the Edo period, the area was known as Ito-ya-cho, a district full of thread shops and bustling trade. Our house dates back to the late Edo or early Meiji era, with parts of the original structure, such as the storehouse, still preserved. Today, this historic home has been thoughtfully restored to welcome travelers from around the world. well-preserved machiya townhouses in nishijin textile district, kyoto
